Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe's Son Deacon Opens Up About Feeling 'Extremely Lucky' as He Makes His Film Debut

In a new interview ahead of the release of his first feature film, Deacon Phillippe opens up about navigating a Hollywood career as the son of famous parents, and why he refuses to let that be the whole story.

Deacon Phillippe is at the cusp of a movie career, and he’s aware of the pressure that comes with being the son of famous actors. The 22-year-old son of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe knows he’s lucky, but he’s also stepping into the spotlight on his own terms.

The young Philippe is making his feature film acting debut in the indie sci-fi thriller "Brother Save Us," which premieres at the Nashville Film Festival on September 26. Despite his family ties, he has no plans of relying on them.

Phillippe made sure to complete his education first before embarking on a career in Hollywood. He graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts this past May, and speaking to Variety ahead of his film’s premiere, he reflected on this. "That was a really big thing, and I think I'm really glad I was pushed to make sure I got that done," he said. "I'm beyond grateful for my education, and I think it's provided so many things."

Phillippe also studied recorded music at NYU's Clive Davis Institute, where he and two college friends ended up recording the end credits song for "Brother Save Us" using the school's studios.

On being the son of two popular actors, Phillippe understands the pressure he is under, but he has standards of his own. "I acknowledge that I'm extremely lucky, but you know, at the same time, I hold myself to a standard," he told Variety. "I'm not really looking to prove anything to anyone but myself to try to be the best version I can be, and work as hard as I can."

In "Brother Save Us," Phillippe plays a farmer in a dystopian America trying to protect his family’s farm and his younger brother from a company replacing human workers with AI. Having a younger half-brother himself, Tennessee Toth, Phillippe found a personal connection to his role. "I just remember feeling surprised that someone could write exactly how I feel about my little brother," he said. "That depth of love in a script is just something you rarely get to see."

Though this is Phillippe's first feature film, he has dabbled in acting in the past. He appeared in "Never Have I Ever" and Prime Video's "Motorheads," in which he played a younger version of his father's character.

His future projects include a rom-com for Netflix titled "Better Than the Movies," where he will be testing the waters of the genre his mother was famous for. Asked to name his favorite of Witherspoon's romantic comedies, he named "Sweet Home Alabama."

Apart from acting, Phillippe is also passionate about music, which spawned an album back in 2023 when he was still studying. His debut album, "A New Earth," was a 12-track project he recorded mostly in his NYU dorm room during his first year of school. "That was one of the most challenging things I ever did," he told People at the time. "Recorded it all in there with my friends, my roommates, while going to school."

Phillippe is currently working on new music with his best friend, inspired by their own lives. Meanwhile, he’s also considering other ventures, such as a remake of the 2011 film, “Real Steel,” which he says he loves, adding, "I think bringing the nostalgia back from that IP would be really fun."
