Lionel Richie Hospitalized in St. Louis, Months After Cutting Minnesota Concert Short

For the second time this year, Lionel Richie's health has interrupted his tour, this time landing him in intensive care after a St. Louis performance where he needed a chair to finish the show.

Lionel Richie was hospitalized in the intensive care unit in St. Louis after performing in the city on Saturday, August 29.

According to TMZ, the singer checked himself into a hospital following his Saturday night show at the Muny in Forest Park for some tests. Doctors were reportedly checking for possible slight dehydration, and Richie was hoping to be discharged the following Tuesday.

Witnesses of the show said Richie, 77, appeared to struggle toward the end, and during the set closer, "All Night Long," he asked his team for a chair so he could sit while performing.

On August 31, Rolling Stone reported that a source close to the singer's tour confirmed he was okay, though details about what led to the hospitalization weren't shared.

Richie’s latest health issue comes just two months after he fell ill onstage during a concert in St. Paul, Minnesota. About 55 minutes into the June 25 show, he called for an intermission and told the crowd he felt dizzy and strange, prompting him to sit during his performance of “Dancing on the Ceiling.”

Paramedics met Richie backstage and took him to a hospital by ambulance. About 40 minutes after the intermission was called, saxophonist Dino Soldo told the crowd Richie was not feeling well and could not continue the show.

Richie's St. Louis performance was his first since wrapping his tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. The two acts are scheduled to reunite in September and October for rescheduled shows in San Francisco, Chicago, and Columbus, after which Richie will begin a Las Vegas residency running through November.
