Céline Dion's Return to the Stage in Her Paris Residency Fulfills Promise to Fans

After six years away from the concert stage, Céline Dion returned in tears. The 58-year-old singer kicked off her 26-show Paris residency on September 12, delivering on a promise she made to fans.

It took six years for Céline Dion to return to the stage, and it was an emotional comeback, to say the least.

The 58-year-old singer was visibly in tears as she kicked off her 26-show residency in Paris on September 12. Just seconds into her opening song, "On Ne Change Pas,” Dion stopped mid-song and wiped away her tears, then placed a hand on her chest before resuming.

The show at Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, France, marks the first time Dion has performed a full concert in over six years. Addressing her audience in both French and English, she thanked her fans for their support.

"I made a promise. I made a promise to come back, to be back on stage," she added. "So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing life!"

“Thank you so very much for your support, your patience, and if I may say so: I am everything I am because you loved me," Dion continued, referencing her song, “Because You Loved Me.”

The last time Dion held a full concert was in March 2020, right before the COVID-19 pandemic put a pause on everything. She was eventually forced to cancel the rest of the tour after she was diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder causing muscle stiffness and spasms. Dion had been feeling the symptoms for 17 years, but was only got a formal diagnosis in 2022.

Dion had eased away from the limelight since then, focusing on her rehabilitation. As part of her treatment, she was taking new medication and getting physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. She only appeared on stage twice: during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics and at a fashion show in Saudi Arabia later that year.

Dion announced her residency in an Instagram post in March, calling it "the best birthday gift of my life," adding, "I'm getting the chance to see you, to perform for you."

In August, Dion opened up to Harper’s Bazaar about her commitment to giving back to her fans when she returns to the stage. "It's been so long, I would like to offer them something to show how I've missed them," Dion said.

Tickets for Dion’s Paris residency sold so quickly that a second residency, set for May 2027, has already begun selling.
